Reestablishing Pharmaceutical Sovereignty and Solving Our Nation’s Drug Shortage Crisis

Richmond, Virginia, September 8, 2024 – Phlow announced today that it will honor the 4th National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day (NEMSAD), a national observance day occurring each year on September 8, by reaffirming its commitment to creating bold, new solutions that reestablish the nation’s pharmaceutical sovereignty.

“We have an unwavering commitment at Phlow to treat every day as if it’s National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day because the health and security of our nation depend on it,” said Eric Edwards, M.D., Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Phlow. “We recognize this national observance day as a call to action for all Americans to lock arms and rebuild a resilient domestic supply chain that is capable of manufacturing our country’s most essential, life-changing medicines.”

As part of Phlow’s steadfast mission to help end shortages in the U.S., Phlow recently joined a select group of purpose-driven businesses by becoming the first pharmaceutical manufacturer based in America to earn B Corporation™ (B Corp™) certification. The new certification further emphasizes Phlow’s commitment to improving access and availability of domestically produced, high-quality pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) through advanced manufacturing and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.

Phlow also recently announced that it has now shipped one million vials of essential medications to children’s hospitals across the country that are part of the Children’s Hospital Coalition as part of its aim to ensure the reliable and affordable supply of high-quality essential medicines and help prevent pediatric drug shortages. Phlow is a founding member of the Children’s Hospital Coalition, a first-of-its-kind coalition of leading hospitals working to end drug shortages that affect pediatric patients. The Children’s Hospital Coalition brings together some of the top children’s hospitals across the nation, in collaboration with Phlow, to provide certainty in availability, quality, access, and affordability for critical medicines.

“Phlow’s goal is to manufacture critical active pharmaceutical ingredients that will ensure the resiliency and availability of critical medicines in times of geopolitical crises, trade disputes, natural disasters, or future public health emergencies,” said Dan Hackman, President of Phlow. “Our Research and Development laboratory in Richmond, Virginia, and new advanced manufacturing facilities in Petersburg, Virginia, represent best-in-class domestic manufacturing infrastructure capable of leveraging advanced development and manufacturing processes to reimagine the domestic production of key starting materials (KSMs), APIs, and finished pharmaceutical products that are critical to U.S. healthcare. We call on others to join us as we work together to solve critical pharmaceutical supply chain challenges by moving far beyond the boundaries of the status quo in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing.”

Phlow is recognizing the 4th National Essential Medicine Shortage Awareness Day by not only reaffirming its own mission but also encouraging other leaders in life sciences, industry experts, government leaders, and American citizens to help bring an end to essential medicine shortages.
